Happy Birthday Ms. Johan!

tapos parang "lungkot effect" itong picture.

V: at bakit?
Johan: dahil ako ang dyos. joke lang.
---
---
---
V: Define the philippines in one word.
Johan: Love. haha
---
Johan: I've expected that.

Johan: Yun na un. ung thesis tsaka makagraduate on time.

Happy Birthday Johan! Taas kamao.

I've Just Seen A Face*

Everybody hearts this guy, I guess. I'm not talking about Edward Cullen or whoever protagonist in a certain book or movie but the one in the picture above. And you see, I’m certainly not that religious, it's not Jesus Christ.

I've seen his face.

*a composition of a person with the name that typically goes with that of the guy in the pic, also my favorite song.

petition for the workers of kowloon

INSTRUCTIONS: Please read the petition first before signing INSTRUCTIONS:/ Please sign by writing your NAME/SCHOOL/PLACE OF WORK/WEBSITE[if any]/ORGANIZATION & Position[if any]) INSTRUCTIONS: Whenever the signatures reach to a hundred (ex. 100, 200, 300 and so forth), please forward to solidarity125.up.diliman@gmail.com

INSTRUCTIONS: For more information, please email us at solidarity125.up.diliman@gmail.com

We, the undersigned, support the ongoing strike of the workers of the Kowloon Restaurant in West Avenue, Quezon City. We support the strike as a legitimate way for the workers to defend their rights, in the face of a Restaurant Management that has violated minimum wage laws, and a National Labor Relations Commission that does not base its decisions on the Law it is supposed to uphold. We support the workers in their call for the Management to follow minimum wage laws. As of present, the minimum wage for workers in the National Capital Region is at P382. Yet, before the workers held picket-protests last June 20-21, the 2 most recent wage hikes (amounting to P82) were not being implemented by the Management. We support the workers in their call for the National Labor Relations Commission to reverse its decision calling the picket-protests an “illegal strike”. The Labor Code clearly states that a strike is a “disruption of operations”. Yet, the pickets were held outside the workers’ work hours, and away from the entrances of the Restaurant. This decision is the supposed legal basis for firing all 73 workers who are members of their union. We support the workers in calling for the reinstatement all 73 of them who were fired for simply exercising their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, rights that are enshrined in our Constitution. We call on the Department of Labor and Employment, and other concerned Government agencies, to investigate and take action on the following: the Management’s violation of the minimum wage (including paying all its contractual employees a minimum daily wage of P250), the unjust decision of the NLRC, the illegal termination of the 73 workers, and the presence of policemen that violate the Labor Code’s banning of policemen and military within 50 meters of any picket line. MOST IMPORTANTLY, we urge all our fellow Filipinos to support the strike of the Kowloon workers by boycotting the Kowloon Restaurant until the Management reinstates the 73 workers, and pays them the Minimum Wage that is mandated by law. We urge everyone to sign this petition and forward it to everyone they know, until it reaches concerned authorities. Signed,

Aglahi sa Setyembre

Higit sa pagtatalik ng gunita at papel;

Sapagkat ilang sandali mula ngayon

Nasanay sa liwanag ng araw;

I have so much to share about pop culture and its politics, dahil sa araw-araw na ginawa naman ng Diyos ay laging may relevance ang anumang tungkol dito. My professor assigned my group to do a presentation about the cultural politics and social deconstruction of Nora Aunor. Yung may mga linyang: “Walang himala!”, “My brother is not a pig!” at “I did not kill anybody!”. Ngayon ko lang rin nalaman na si Ishmael Bernal pala nagdirek ng “Himala” kaya pala ganon ito ka-hit, it even went international.
BOOK AND BAND HUNTING
Pumunta ko sa UP-Diliman, hiniram ko sa Main Lib yung librong “Si Nora Aunor sa mga Noranians”, “Bonifacio’s Bolo” ni Ambeth Ocampo at “Nora Aunor and other Profiles” ni Nick Joaquin. Sinubukan ko ring hanapin kasama ang groupmate ko yung Nora Aunor Band na sinasabi ni Vern (loko talaga to), so we interviewed UP Underground Music Community tsaka yung Music Circle, di raw nila ka-org yung band na yon at wala silang idea tungkol dito. Dapat pala sa Film Institute kami pumunta, dun maraming info. Nag-isaw na lang kami at nag-YB.
NAFClub
Anyway, I had the connection and sent a message to the Nora Aunor Fans Club which is actually the name of the band, mas kilala na NAFClub, mga Cabalen pala sila. I asked them kung ano ang influence na naibigay sa kanila ni Ate Guy as individuals and as a band. Kaya..the vocalist ended up - dumped. The vocalist even admitted na naging musical influence nya na rin si Ate Guy, aside from Pantera, The Doors, Audioslave, etc.
ON OTHER NORANIANS
SUPERSTAR POLITICS

Praxis

“There is a nobler ambition in life than merely to stand tall in the crowd and that is to stoop down and lift the human race a little higher.”

STP. STR.

ABSENCE OF ARIANNE

Where has Arianne been? I'm talking about one of the writers here in Gatsulat. This is my reply to those who emailed me and even sent me death notes begging me to bring back Arianne...as if I am hiding her. Please let me live in peace. This is the reason why she can't post recently:

April15 to May19, 2008 = Practicum at Hacienda Yulo (paglubog sa komunidad / mass integration)
Labor Day - Calamba, Laguna
Cultural Presentation of Alay Sining
Hapunan sa bahay sa Hacienda Yulo
Ang Palikuran na Iniyakan
I asked Arianne how she is right now and this is her reply:

Kudos Arianne!

wtf

I thought that only rock bands would do campus tours, but as of these past few days, the starwitness of the NBN-ZTE scandal, Jun Lozada has been visiting different schools and institutions in the Metro for the search for truth and justice, to answer questions from the youth and the cynicals, and to let others see what they still cannot see. Also, for the past weeks, i found myself in different conversations in light of the political situation, not just mere conversations, but debates.

So he was the guest speaker in our "Forum for Truth and Justice (and Accountability) this afternoon. He shared 3 lessons that he learned for the past month since he arrived from Hongkong (that was Feb.5).

(Note that he revealed the truth, as he said "para mailigtas ang kaluluwa ko")

Mahiya Naman Kayo!

Jesus is Lord over Makati City! Jesus is Lord over MalacaƱang!".

some political economy of gender

Linguistic sexism.
Sexism is basically about the sexual discrimination especially against women. There are certain behaviors or beliefs that perpetuate or encourage stereotypes of social roles based on sex. In the use of language, especially the English, its structure and content is an issue as it reflects bias in favor of one sex, which is in most cases, men while it discriminates the other sex or women.
It has been a question whether or not language reflects gender inequities that already exist or if it is language that influences thought. If it is the latter that is present in the society, linguistic change will be necessary to be a step on changing the culture of gender. If it is the other way around, that is, if language merely reflects inequities, then, social, political and economic changes have to come before we can expect substantial linguistic change to occur.
The English language represents gender inequities and it is thought to be sexist in structure and form. One example is the word “man”, it is a widely used term and in English, it technically refers to all humans while the word “his” refers to the thinking of a single person of either gender. The frequent use of such words shows the notion that males are more important than females. In words such as “chairman”, “policeman” and “businessman”, there is a gender bias, as the often use of these words may convey that males are supposedly the ones to have those jobs. On other terms, usually the base or root word is male, to make up for the female form, a suffix is added. It may convey that the female form is just an afterthought and the less important, while on other gender terminologies, like in pairs of words “master/mistress” and “wizard/witch”, more often than not, the female versions have negative connotations.
These may be the result of theories like the strength theory which states that the greater strength of males and their superior capacity to mobilize their strength had became the reasons for the universal pattern in the division of labor by gender. Also, men seem to take over certain crafts in societies in full time specialization while women usually do the tasks that require less strength and effort. In the old times, women are supposed to stay at home which shows the society's view of them as powerless and subordinate to men, while men are considered to be the center of the family and the society. As we move into this day and age, it is a good thing that the way the English language is written and spoken has begun to change. The words such as “chair” or “chairperson” and “police officer” have begun to replace their former male versions.
Linguistic sexism is a social problem. It reflects how the people in the society thinks and how they view their differences with discrimination. To address this social problem, the first thing to do is to eliminate gender biases and sexism in the society.

on land reform

That’s what my Professor said in our class just hours ago. And it hit me, not so hard, but at least it hit me, Im a NNARA (National Network for Agrarian Reform Advocates) –YOUTH SECTOR member, and I should be constantly aware of our farmers’ situation. So during class, my mind went busy over thoughts about the Sumilao farmers and about the Lakbayan (which is being participated by farmers and militants who are marching from today until Monday, which is my birthday =)). Inspired by the Sumilao farmers who walked for months to win back their land, they are also hoping that PGMA, the tsunano, will grant what they want when they finally reach MalacaƱang.

Ito na ang pinakamataas na porma ng pakikibaka (para mabawi ang aming lupa)” one farmer said in the news tonight.

Mendiola Massacre.
January 22, 1987, thirteen died due to the ruthless dispersal which happened in Mendiola way back. Those who died and many others who joined that mobilization/rally were primarily farmers who were asking for their own piece of land or, a genuine land reform.
So, you see, land reform has always been a problem of farmers even before I existed. From the yesteryears, the farmers, who should be the priority of the government, were faced by social injustice. Hey, you might not be aware, but 75% of Filipinos are from the agricultural sector, simply put, farmers. Hence, "tatsulok" is how we call our society. The largest faction of the Filipinos is on the bottommost part, and the ruling elite or the landlords are on the topmost. “Baligtarin ang tatsulok”, the song says, to realize this, the government should give the farmers what they need. CARP? Arg, launched by Cory Aquino during her administration, a landlord herself, the program’s name really can deceive, but it sure is just a label and nothing fine happened with this Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program.
Almost 50% of the victims of extra-judicial killings and also, almost 50% of the desaparecidos are from their sector. As long as there are farmers who continue to experience social injustice, we are to expect more and more of them joining the army and fighting there in the mountains.

TRIP TO CHILE

I did not go to Chile, but i did go to the Chilean Embassy in Makati, and i had an in-my-mind picture of what Chile is like. It was the 7th embassy Ive visited, so far. So we interviewed Mr. Felipe Diaz, a Chilean diplomat. The major point or question that we had to ask was basically about the key elements of economic development. The basic assumption here is that, the opinion of the interviewee, in this case, Mr. Diaz, wouldnt reflect the opinion or the stand of the country as a whole, which is Chile. So the diplomat speaks Spanish, it is the major language of every South American country, except Brazil which is Portuguese. Good thing he can also speak in English, though at the beggining of his every sentence, he would say "I do not know how to say it in English.."

In his opinion, Chile continues to develop because of these things:
  • open economy
  • tight fiscal policies
  • an annual saving of 1% from the national budget
  • political and social stability

Likewise, these are some of the things we should apply here in the Philippines, but i have doubts on an "open economy". It may lead to privatization of government institutions, and that isnt okay. So to discuss about these things is boring. Aside from economic facts, i learned these random things from the diplomat.

THE MARCOS OF CHILE

Pinochet ruled Chile as a dictator, he killed around 3000 people and stayed in position longer than what was enough. Very much like Marcos, was he not?

LOVE, CHILEAN STYLE

"Do not take love seriously, for love is like a flower, it doesnt last long." - Mr. Felipe Diaz

I saw a picture frame of his family in his desk, his wife is pretty, and so is their child, then he continued..

"Love lasts only for months, you know, my wife and I were friends, we married because we tolerate each other. Love fades away so easily, after the first months of kisses and hugs, after all those flings and stuff, love would fade."

- Im sorry sir, but definitely, that is not how we view love here in the Philippines. -

CAREER. SUCCESS. STUDIES.

"Focus more on your career, after all, you are young, you can have many boyfriends, you can change them every month. Always do your best in everything, when you do, life would be easier. Study hard, when you do, you wouldnt need to look for a job, the job will look for you."

THE UP PRESIDENTS

"The former UP president Nemenzo is a friend of mine, Roman is a low-profile one.." and I replied.."Yes sir, and i so hate Roman." He knew what i was talking about.

"I ALSO SMOKE, BUT NOT NOW, THANKS SIR"

During the middle of the interview, he pulled a pack of Marlboro lights from his pocket. "Im sorry but i have to smoke and smoke and smoke, for my resolution, i will not smoke next year, or else, Ill lose my wife and my family (hoo you dont even love your wife), do you want to smoke?"

ARTS AND LITERATURE

I asked him something about Pablo Neruda (one of my favorites and a Chilean poet) and he mentioned an exhibit in Intramuros, lots of Chilean poetries and paintings, wow.

ENGLISH and FILIPINOS

"Its good that here in the Philippines, though not all can speak in English, many still can understand it. It's different in Chile, Chileans only know Spanish. It's very different. But Spanish is very easy to learn "

"Yes sir, i was studying Spanish last night.." - Arianne

"Oh really? Let us speak in Spanish now.." - Mr. Diaz

"No sir, she was just preparing to meet you..=)" - Vina

"Haha i appreciate it." -Mr. Diaz

"Funny thing, whenever i ask for directions to Filipinos, you know, the vendors and those poeple in the streets, they would only answer and say "Yes!" Haha, well at least they know what "yes" means." - Mr. Diaz

See, cute talaga ang Pinoy.

Of nosebleed moments and consuls

ISANG EKSENA KANINA SA LOOB NG VIETNAMESE EMBASSY:

Arianne: Excuse me sir, we are students from the University of the Philippines and Id just ask if we can conduct an interview with anyone from this embassy?
Consul Quang: Huh?
Vina: Sir, an interview regarding the key elements of economic development..
Consul Quang: no..no..(nagbigay ng calling card ng Secretary of the Ambassador..), call him.
Arianne: Sir, is he here today?
Consul Quang: Ah.. he..he.. go outside..to eat..yah..
Arianne: So can we have the interview when he return?
Consul Quang: no..no..busy..very busy..
Arianne: Can we ask for brochures, or any reading materials about Vietnam?
Consul Quang: brochure?? what is mean?
Arianne: Sir, a leaflet? or any sheet of paper that has information on it.
Consul Quang: YOU KNOW?! THIS IS THE CONSULAR OFFICE!!
Kami: (walk out..) Pissed Off!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You see, i have nothing against those who cannot speak or understand the language of globalization..But when you are a Vietnamese and you are working here in the Philippines, i think you should be at least in-the-know of the basic terms. For Consul Quang, i hate him for this reason.
A good point in connection to his clueless conversation with us: As I see it, the use of the English language has not always been a factor for a country to experience progress. Take Japan for example, the people in there almost knew nothing about English terms, and yet their country is well-developed. There are thousands of Filipinas working in Japan, but before they set their feet in the land of the rising sun, firstly, they have to know how to speak Nippongo or (there's another one) . The logic here is that they are the "dayo". they are the ones who should adjust and learn the local languange. Sa Pilipinas baligtad. When we see those Kano here in our country, we speak their language. We see Koreans, we say "Anyong ha seyo.." (tama ba ung spelling?). We see those Hapons, we say "Arigato" whatever.
So tomorrow, we're going to interview the diplomats of Canada and Australia. Hay, hope they could understand us this time.

PROMETHEUS UNBOUND
by Ruben Cuevas

I shall never exchange my fetters for slavish servility.
'Tis better to be chained to the rock than be bound to the service of Zeus.

--Aeschylus, Prometheus Unbound

Mars shall glow tonight,
Artemis is out of sight.
Rust in the twilight sky
Colors a bloodshot eye,
Or shall I say that dust
Sunders the sleep of the just?
Hold fast to the gift of fire!
I am rage! I am wrath! I am ire!
The vulture sits on my rock,
Licks at the chains that mock
Emancipation's breath,
Reeks of death, death, death.
Death shall not unclench me.
I am earth, wind and sea!
Kisses bestow on the brave
That defy the damp of the grave
And strike the chill hand of
Death with the flaming sword of love.
Orion stirs. The vulture
Retreats from the hard, pure
Thrust of the spark that burns,
Unbounds, departs, returns
To pluck out of death's fist
A god who dared to resist.

Cannabis. Did i spell that right?

Rage (PART I)

So I guess I made myself a part of history yesterday, of some sort. And it was not the first time, way back February last year, I was there at Ayala when GMA the bullshit declared the State of National Emergency, when one buwaya/pulis patola physically hurt me with his shit shield, as a college freshman that I was, I cried since the wound he caused at the tip of my right foot bled, when I, with a thousand of other rallyists from different sectors marched all the way from Edsa to Ayala, when business establishments in there dropped almost a million shredded pieces of paper, or confetti..
So I suppose this page could not contain all the experiences I had during that day, so maybe these phrases will do: Flashing lights from the media. Known reporters from different tv stations. Businessmen taking pictures of the rallyists, food inavailability, red shirts, helicopters, hundreds of policemen, government stupidity and violence. The hell, so it was labeled 'de facto martial law'.

Yesterday bears a resemblance to February 24, 2006.

During the first half of my yesterday, I was stuck in traffic, so I was clueless and an hour late for my 10am class, I was still in Bacoor at 10:30am, Chong said “Spread the news about global warming, so the people will know, less automobiles, no pollution, no traffic” or something like that, he’s turning to be an environmentalist, kudos to him. Another malas incident, my bus seatmate puked, good thing he brought a plastic with him, and bad thing I saw all the mess he did, I accidentaly glanced at the plastic LABO. Ulk.
I said..”Chong, malas ang araw ko.”

Anak, uwi agad after class” – dad
“Yan, anong oras uwi mo? May gulo sa Makati, wag magpagabi!” - mom
ALERT: Gen. Lim, Trillanes, Guingona and other Magdalo military men are marching in Makati calling for GMA’s ouster. Standby po tayo para sa posibleng pagkilos.” – Loise, KARATULA

Salamat sa mga nag-update sakin, dahil nasa school ako at LOST. As in lost sa mga pangyayari. Sandali lang first half pa lang to..

As Sen. Trillanes put it "It is our moral obligation.. to do what is right."
